Quick answer: A diaper count calculator compares today's diapers with what's expected for your baby's age. In the first days expect 2-3 wet diapers; from about day 5, at least 6 heavy wet diapers a day (NHS) and, from day 4, at least 2 soft yellow poos in breastfed babies. Fewer can signal too little milk.

TL;DR

  • Enter your baby's birth date and today's wet and dirty diaper counts.
  • From day 5, fewer than 6 heavy wet diapers in 24 hours is a reason to call.
  • The planner estimates diapers per month: young babies use 10-12 a day (NHS).

This diaper count calculator does two things. First, it checks whether today's wet and dirty diapers fit what's expected for your baby's day of life, which is one of the best signs a newborn is feeding well. Second, it estimates how many diapers you'll go through each month so you can stock up.

How to use the diaper count calculator

  1. Enter your baby's birth date (or day of life).
  2. Enter wet and dirty diapers in the last 24 hours.
  3. Read the check: in range, check with your midwife or pediatrician today, or seek care now (with the reasons).
  4. Open the planner to see diapers per day and per month by age.

How the diaper count calculator works

The expected counts come from the NHS, AAP and La Leche League GB:

Day of lifeWet diapers (24 h)Dirty diapers (24 h)
Day 1-21-31+ (black, sticky meconium)
Day 3-43+2+ (changing to green-brown)
Day 5-65-6+ (heavy)2+ yellow (breastfed)
Day 7-286+ (heavy)2+ soft yellow, about £2-coin size

After about 6 weeks, breastfed babies may poo less often, sometimes not for several days; the NHS says that's fine if poos are soft. The planner uses 10-12 changes a day for young babies and 6-8 for older babies (NHS).

Worked example

Noor is 6 days old. In 24 hours she had 4 wet and 3 yellow dirty diapers. The tool flags wet diapers below range (expected 6+ heavy from day 5) and suggests calling the midwife or pediatrician today to check feeding.

Signs to get help

Seek medical help urgently if your baby has fewer than 2 wet diapers in 24 hours after day 3, dark urine or orange-red urate crystals after the first couple of days, a dry mouth, a sunken soft spot, is unusually sleepy or floppy, or has a fever. La Leche League GB lists these as dehydration signs. For fever thresholds by age see baby fever: when to call.

What a wet diaper feels like

Modern disposables wick moisture, so it's hard to tell. The NHS suggests pouring 2 to 4 tablespoons of water into a clean diaper to feel what 'heavy' means. Many diapers also have a wetness line.

Log diapers with feeds

Diapers only make sense next to feeds. Tot's diaper tracker logs each change with its time alongside feeds and sleep, and anyone you share with can add changes. Read the full newborn diaper count guide and the baby poop color chart.
