Quick answer: Newborn feeding basics: feed 8-12 times in 24 hours, about every 2-3 hours, on your baby's hunger cues (CDC). Formula-fed newborns take about 1-2 oz per feed at first, rising to 2-3 oz by 2 weeks. Count diapers, expect some weight loss in the first days, and call your pediatrician with any worry.

TL;DR

  • 8-12 feeds a day, day and night, for breast and bottle.
  • Small amounts at first: 1-2 oz rising to 2-3 oz.
  • Diapers and weight gain tell you it's working.

Newborn feeding takes up most of the first weeks, and the questions come fast: is this enough, is this too often, is this normal? This guide covers what pediatric guidance says about the first four weeks, for breastfeeding, formula and combination feeding.

How often should a newborn eat?

The CDC says most newborns feed 8-12 times in 24 hours, about every 2-3 hours, and the AAP notes breastfed newborns often feed every 2 hours. Count from the start of one feed to the start of the next. In the first weeks, the AAP advises waking your baby to feed if they sleep longer than 4-5 hours. Evenings are often busier; cluster feeding is normal.

How much should a newborn eat?

AgeFormula per feedBreastfeeding
Days 1-3about 0.5-1 oz (15-30 ml), rising8-12+ feeds; colostrum in small amounts
Days 4-141-2 oz rising to 2-3 oz (30-90 ml)8-12 feeds; milk comes in around day 2-5
Weeks 2-42-4 oz (60-120 ml)8-12 feeds

These are typical figures from AAP and CDC guidance; your baby sets the amount. The newborn feeding chart has a sample day.

Reading hunger and fullness cues

Early hunger cues include rooting, sucking on hands, lip smacking and turning toward the breast or bottle; crying is a late cue. Fullness looks like slowing down, closing the mouth, turning away and relaxed hands. See baby hunger cues.

Diapers and weight: signs it's working

Most babies lose some weight in the first days and are back to birth weight by about 2 weeks. The NHS says that from day 5 you should see at least 6 heavy wet nappies a day and at least 2 soft yellow poos. Track them with the diaper count calculator.

Should you log newborn feeds?

Logging isn't required, but many parents find it helps in the first weeks, especially if there are concerns about weight, jaundice or supply, or if several people share feeds. Write down start time, side or amount, and diapers. Tot does this on your phone, shared with your partner.

When to call your pediatrician

Call if your baby has fewer wet diapers than expected, is very sleepy and hard to wake for feeds, has yellow skin that's spreading or worsening, has a fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, or is not back to birth weight by about 2 weeks.

FAQ

How long should a newborn feed?

Breastfeeds often last 10-40 minutes. Let your baby finish the first breast, then offer the second.

Is it normal for a newborn to eat every hour?

Short bursts of very frequent feeds, especially in the evening, are normal. If it's constant all day, check latch and diapers with your midwife or pediatrician.

Can I overfeed a newborn with formula?

Yes, it's possible with bottles. Use paced feeding and stop when your baby shows fullness cues.

Do newborns need water?

No. Babies under 6 months get all the fluid they need from breast milk or formula.

When will my newborn sleep longer between feeds?

Usually from about 6-8 weeks some babies stretch one night sleep to 4-5 hours, but it varies.
