Newborn Diaper Count: How Many Wet and Dirty Diapers

Quick answer: Newborn diaper count: expect 1-3 wet diapers in the first two days, rising to at least 6 heavy wet diapers a day from day 5 (NHS), and from day 4 at least 2 soft yellow poos a day in breastfed babies. Fewer wet diapers, dark urine or a sleepy, floppy baby can mean too little milk; call your pediatrician.

TL;DR

  • Day 5 onwards: 6+ heavy wet diapers a day.
  • Day 4 onwards: 2+ yellow poos (breastfed).
  • Fewer can be a feeding warning sign.

Since you can't see how much milk a breastfed baby drinks, the newborn diaper count is your best daily check that feeding is going well.

Diapers by day of life

DayWet (24 h)Dirty (24 h)
1-21-31+ black, sticky meconium
3-43+2+ changing to green-brown
5-65-6+ heavy2+ yellow (breastfed)
7-286+ heavy2+ soft yellow

Based on NHS, AAP and La Leche League GB guidance. The AAP also says at least 5-6 wet diapers a day after the first 4-5 days. Check counts with the diaper count calculator.

After the first month

Wet diapers stay at 6 or more a day. Breastfed babies may poo less often after about 6 weeks, sometimes not for several days; the NHS says this is fine if poos are soft. Formula-fed babies usually poo daily or every other day.

Dehydration signs

  • Fewer than 2 wet diapers in 24 hours after day 3
  • Dark yellow urine or orange crystals after the first days
  • Dry mouth, no tears, sunken soft spot
  • Very sleepy or floppy

Seek medical help urgently for any of these.

How many diapers will you use?

The NHS says young babies may need changing 10-12 times a day, older babies 6-8 times. That's around 300-360 diapers in the first month.
